Bill Would Apply Hyde Amendment to Obama's Pro-Abortion Health Care Law
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A new bill filed by pro-life members of Congress would apply the historic Hyde amendment language to the new health care bill President Barack Obama signed into law that calls for massive abortion funding.
The legislation would afford the same pro-life protections that were approved with bipartisan support in the House last year via the Stupak amendment that didn't make the final bill.
Stupak, the author of the previous amendment, eventually joined with other pro-life Democrats in voting for the pro-abortion health care bill in exchange for an Obama executive order that pro-life groups say won't truly ban abortion funding...

Congressman Bart Stupak to Retire
Michigan Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak, who was the central figure in the abortion debate surrounding the health care law, will retire from Congress at the end of this term.
Stupak, who's been in Congress for 18 years, will make the announcement at a 12:30 p.m. ET press conference in Marquette, Mich.
Stupak told The Associated Press that attacks on him for his role in the abortion debate did not influence his decision and he could win re-election if he tried...
Bart Stupak Asked to Stop Attacking Pro-Life Groups on Pro-Abortion Health Care
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Congressman Bart Stupak caused outrage within the pro-life community when he wrote an opinion column which appeared in the Washington Post on March 27. The article raised eyebrows as Stupak attacked pro-life organizations by saying they are more interested in politics than pro-life.
"The pro-life groups rallied behind me -- many without my knowledge or consent -- not necessarily because they shared my goals of ensuring protections for life and passing health-care reform but because they viewed me as their best chance to kill health-care legislation," Stupak wrote.
William Saunders, a vice president at Americans United for Life, issued a response to Stupak in an opinion column at the Daily Caller.
He said pro-life advocates were "deeply disappointed" to read Stupak's comments...
Pro-Life Democrat Who Split With Stupak Pans Obama Abortion Executive Order
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In the aftermath of the House passing and Obama signing the pro-abortion health care bill, pro-life Democrats have been taken to task for voting for it in exchange for a flimsy executive order that won't truly ban abortion funding. But one Democrat who voted against the bill is standing his ground.
Congressman Dan Lipinski of Illinois had been a member of the Stupak dozen but joined a few other pro-life Democrats in splitting with Rep. Bart Stupak.
Although Stupak made the deal to trade his and a handful of votes from other pro-life Democrats -- ensuring passage of the pro-abortion bill -- Lipinski stood his ground...
Stupak Decision Blasted As ‘Unconscionable’
(CNSNews.com) – Pro-life activists call it “regrettable” that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) ended up abandoning those who stood by him in his opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion in the Democrats’ health care bill.
Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote.org, said Stupak’s decision to accept the promise of a presidential executive order as a solution to the abortion-funding issue is “unconscionable.”
“The Executive Order fix is a band-aid solution that fails to solve the fundamental problems in this bill, and can be repealed at any time, for any reason, by the president or future presidents. The order is likely to be challenged by pro-abortion groups, and could be struck down by the courts,” Burch said in a news release issued Sunday night...
Bart Stupak: Democrats Killing Health Care Bill over Abortion, I'm Still a No Vote
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In a new interview with "Good Morning America" on Friday morning, leading pro-life Democrat Bart Stupak said he is open to working with Speaker Nancy Pelosi on banning abortion funding under the Senate health care bill. But if she refuses to negotiate, he and other pro-life Democrats will vote no.
Stupak is the author of the famous amendment that banned abortion funding under the House measure but did not make the Senate version.
As the House prepares to vote on the Senate bill, Stupak has repeatedly tried to get Pelosi to consider allowing language to ban abortion funding, to no avail...
Bart Stupak: Nancy Pelosi Lacks Votes for Pro-Abortion Health Care in House
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her top Democratic lieutenants are pushing the Senate pro-abortion health care bill. However, a top pro-life Democrat and political observers say she doesn't have the votes to get the abortion-funding measure through the House.
As LifeNews.com reported yesterday, Democrats are crafting their final plan to push the Senate bill and they say they have the votes even without the help of pro-life Democrats who are firmly against the bill or still undecided.
But Rep. Bart Stupak, the top pro-life Democrat in the House, told Fox News last night that Pelosi lacks the votes she needs for passage.
“No, I don't think so,” Stupak said about whether Pelosi reached her magic number...

Stupak Optimistic on Sidebar Bill Banning Abortion Funding, Pro-Lifers Skeptical
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Congressman Bart Stupak, the de facto leader of the coalition of pro-life Democrats who may vote no on the Senate health care bill because of its massive abortion funding, expressed optimism that a deal could be work out on a sidebar bill to ban funding that goes along with the main bill.
However, pro-life advocates remain skeptical and worry such a bill would enable House passage of the Senate measure and Obama would simply sign the bill without accepting the abortion funding ban.
Stupak has already talked about the possibilities of a sidebar bill and has held meetings with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other top pro-abortion Democrats pushing the government-run health care measure...
Stupak 'More Optimistic' Abortion Fight Will End
Prospects are good for resolving a dispute over abortion that has led some House Democrats to threaten to withhold support of President Obama's health care overhaul, a key Michigan Democrat said Monday.
Rep. Bart Stupak said he expects to resume talks with House leaders this week in a quest for wording that would impose no new limits on abortion rights but also would not allow use of federal money for the procedure.
"I'm more optimistic than I was a week ago," Stupak told The Associated Press between meetings with constituents in his northern Michigan district, including a crowded town hall gathering where opinions on health care and the abortion issue were plentiful and varied...

Senate bill = 'cluster bomb for pro-abortion provisions'
National Right to Life says no true pro-life Democrat would be willing to support the Senate healthcare bill.
President Obama spent considerable time last week making private pitches to Capital Hill Democrats, asking them to trust him when it comes to healthcare reform. On Sunday, Associated Press reported the president will "persuade Congress to pass his healthcare overhaul even if it kills him and even if he has to ask deeply distrustful lawmakers to trust him on a promise the White House doesn't ahve the power to keep." Nevertheless, Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Michigan) and a dozen fellow Democrats who supported the House healthcare bill say they will vote against the Senate version unless it includes a ban on federal funding of abortion.
